How to make more time.

IMG_3040-1024x683

As I write this, our Story Intensive students are in their writing week.

If you have The Story Course, take a look at the assignment for Lesson Seven. (It asks you to make a writing week on your own.)

This is one of the most challenging parts of the course! Funny, isn't it? It's not the writing that's so difficult, it's making the time for it.

I prepare students for this week by reminding them that making time for writing is rarely easy. It will feel like a challenge. Your friends, family, employers -- the rest of the world! -- won't understand how important it is, so it will feel hard to justify it.

Making time for your writing isn't optional, though. Not if you want to write.

Here are a few tools to help you block out the noise and make the white space you need.

Love,

Sarah Selecky

Facebook Newsfeed Eradicator

I ADORE THIS APP. It works for Chrome. When you install it, it puts white space over your Facebook newsfeed, so you aren't distracted by the never-ending scroll of friend updates, inspiring memes and cute shelties. Get on and off Facebook in record time - check your messages, look for updates you care about, and then log off.

Note: Make sure you still get notifications from Story Is a State of Mind School by clicking "receive notifications" on my page. You will find this option under "Like Page." If you've already liked the page, click the arrow beside "Liked" and the blue thumbs up icon, and select when you'd like to receive notifications. I only post things that inspire you to get off Facebook, so it's a good investment.

Omm Writer

Still calm and inspiring after all of these years. It's a free, beautiful space that quickly and easily blots out your computer and turns your screen into a writing spa for the time that you want to be writing. You choose when to start and stop. It takes the punishment out of your creation. Even the cursor is designed to be encouraging - it's horizontal, like a path (not a vertical line, like a wall).

Inbox Pause

A great little button you can install for Gmail - when you need to clear out your inbox to give yourself permission to go write for an hour, but you don't want to get any new replies. This button allows you to stop the madness - at least while you're in there getting things out of the way. Pause your inbox, put out all the little fires, and then close your laptop and write.

Be a writer who moves, a mover who writes.

Big, big fan of Ommwriter. I suspect it's inspired something of a cult following.

AND Ommwriter has officially changed my life! The focus. The simplicity. The elegance. I almost forgot I was on my computer. I also LURVE that you can't format or spell check or really do any editing...who knew what an energy suck THAT was. Mwah and Mahalos! xx
