🎂 Two birthdays, one anniversary, and a brand new website!

Sarah-Selecky-1

I love the month of May. The grass turns green, cherry blossoms arrive, birds sing their coolest, flashiest songs of the year.

This is also the month in which I released my first book (2010), my second book (2018), and my school (2012)!

I often forget to mark these professional birthdays in a special way, because, I mean, what are you going to get a book and a school for a present?

How about a brand new website?

Announcing the new and beautified www.sarahselecky.com!

Photos by the magical Tara McMullen. Ryan created the whole site on Simplero, which is our home base now (no more Wordpress, if you’re interested in software programming).

Note the hot pink contrasting colour I chose for the buttons. This is a colour that I’ve always wanted to use, but have been shy about for some reason. Why? Too girly? Too flashy? Wait—how can you be shy about a colour, anyway? It’s just colour.

So I’m throwing cotton to the wind (ha ha see what I did there?)* for our 10th anniversary, with hot pink. (Or #FF0BAC, if you’re into hex codes.)

#FF0BAC

Please make yourself at home, and share the site with your friends. It’s all nicely formatted for mobile and tablet browsing now (finally). We’ll roll some pages out in our next phase, but the site is ready for you to enjoy today. If you see any bugs, typos or things that don’t work right, send us a note.

🎂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY THIS CAKE IS FOR THE PARTY! 🎂

this-cake-is-for-the-party-1

I published my first book in 2010. Writing these stories taught me that I was a writer. I was completely taken aback when the book was shortlisted for the Giller Prize. This changed my life. I don’t know if I’ve ever fully recovered from the joy-shock. When I read these stories now, they feel weirdly familiar and unfamiliar, at the same time.

12 years later, I’m a completely different person, and yet these stories reflect the same themes I’m obsessed with now. I can’t seem to stop writing about the same things: truth, belonging, love, mystery.

After spending several years eating cakes sent from friends and fans who delighted me with book-shaped cakes, cake collages, cake aprons, cupcake paintings, and other cake-themed gifts, I realized: be careful what you title your book, because the title might become real in your physical life.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RADIANT SHIMMERING LIGHT!

radiant-shimmering-light

Naturally, I called my next book Gold Is Back In Style because, why not? If it worked with cake.

I eventually changed it to Radiant Shimmering Light because the story had nothing to do with gold after all, and there are auras and other light-shimmery parts, and the words felt appropriately new-age-wellness with a dash of painterly sparkle.

Also I thought, hey, let’s bring light into my life! I love light. And it doesn’t have as much sugar as cake.

TV production is still ongoing, and this feels like standing on a really, really long suspension bridge, the end concealed by fog. I promise to let you know as soon as I can publicly announce what’s happening in Hollywood.

Meanwhile, this week I received copies of W promieniach swiatla from Poland, where it was just released, translated by Milena Bryczyńska.

This is the first time my writing has been translated into another language (unless you count American). I can’t read any of it, so if you read Polish, please check it out and tell me if it’s a good translation.

THANK YOU!

Both of my books are still joyfully in print, thanks to readers like you who keep buying them, recommending them to your friends and book clubs, and writing reviews. Thank you. This really means a lot to me.

You can get copies of This Cake and Radiant from your favourite bookstore, or click the links above to get them from your preferred book source.

And if you enjoyed reading, please give them the best birthday present of all: a review on Amazon or Goodreads. Thank you, thank you.

With love + sparklers,

* This is an obscure pun about my own writing, sorry. “Throwing Cotton” = a story in This Cake Is for the Party.
