Maybe you’re doing it wrong.

“I can’t do this.”
“I might never finish this book.”
“I may never write again.”
The creative process naturally brings us to tension points. When we meet these inevitable challenges, we have an opportunity to learn, grow, and expand.
It requires doing something different. Leaving what we know, and going somewhere we’ve never gone before.
Of course, it feels impossible in the moment. Of course, there are growing pains associated with creative work. But we were born for this! We are creative animals. We belong to the change process.
While this process can be challenging, you do not have to suffer through your creative challenges.
If you have thoughts about writing that cause you suffering, you may choose another thought.
You’re writing because you want to write. Right?
Some people want to have a book out, but they don’t want to be writers. That’s okay! There has never been an easier time to get a book published without having to write one. But that’s not you.
You want to write. That’s the truth.
So if you are thinking painful thoughts about your writing, if your process is punitive or completely devoid of pleasure, you’re doing it wrong.
If you’re suffering, it’s a sign that you need to change what you’re thinking or what you’re doing. You need a new tool or technique, a reframe on your thinking, or support to help you get through this particular tension point.
“I don't know how do this yet.”
“I need help with writing my book.”
“I am ready and willing to receive new ideas.”
Come back to what you love about doing what you love.
You might need to initiate a more consistent freewriting practice, and warm up before jumping into your project.
You might need to uplevel your creative writing skills, and learn new techniques to write characterization, dialogue, drama, or deft point of view.
You might need a writing group for support and feedback.
If it’s agonizing, stop doing it.
Find the support you need so you get to enjoy what you’re doing.
Love,
