Mary writes and workshops her work regularly with a dedicated group of five women, all alumni of Story Is a State of Mind and can often be found in local coffee shops writing. After a whirlwind of a time travelling, study, and working in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Ottawa, Toronto, and the south of France, Mary has returned to her Prince Edward Island, where she was born, raised, and attended LM Montgomery elementary school, home of the famed author of Anne of Green Gables.
Story Is a State of Mind brought writing back into my life, and opened up a whole new world for me. This school is truly unique and unparalleled in helping writers to restore their sense of play and curiosity in their writing practice. Writing can be a lonely business, and cultivating a sense of community and solidarity around being brave in your writing practice is essential.
It took only a split second for me to say “YES!” to Sarah’s invitation to be a teacher. Of course I want to do this. I love meeting a new group of writers and guiding them through lessons. I enjoy being a cheerleader! This course has magic in it and so does each student, so I am there to cajole and encourage the magic forces to meet and create and share.
I’m astounded by great writing and have many “Aha” moments as my students discover more about the writing craft through each lesson. I love the discovery each semester brings.
