Stop everything. Back up.
Last week, someone broke into my house. It was 10am, and I was only out of the house for an hour and a half.
I was having tea and smoothies with a dear friend. (Strangely, we had spent the morning talking about houses, space, and clutter -- she's a feng shui maven!)
When I came home, the back door had been pried open with our garden shovel. My house was ransacked. The thief took my laptop and my e-reader.*
If you're reading this, I'm guessing that you also have a computer. I'm also going to assume that you have writing on that computer that needs to be backed up. Am I right?
Think about it. If someone stole your e-reader this afternoon, isn't it great that all of your books would still be in your account? I mean, it sucks that you'd have to get a new e-reader. But at least the books could be restored.
What about your own writing? If your computer was stolen this afternoon, would you be able to restore it easily? Please go here and download Dropbox.
It's an easy, elegant system, and once you set it up, you don't have to think about it anymore. Also, it's free. If you are saving videos, images and music, you might want to upgrade the free version to get more space, but for documents, the free version is more than enough space.
Please protect your writing. Think of backing up as another way to show your work your love and respect. Do it now. Sign up, and then forget about it.
For a second level of protection, you might want to check out Prey — it's free software that you can turn on remotely if your computer goes missing. It activates your webcam and your GPS monitor so you can see who's opening it and find it on a map. SERIOUSLY! **
Okay, public service announcement is over. Back up your work today. And I really hope you never have to use your back ups.
* I had Dropbox, and I was able to restore all of my work immediately, with ease.
**I wish I had heard about Prey before the break-in. However, I do think I'd be pretty freaked out to see video footage of the guy who went through our house.
