International Literacy Day.

literacy

Did you know that September 8th was International Literacy Day?

When I think about what reading has done for me, and what would have happened to me if I never learned how to read, I go weak in the knees.

What would I have done without Beatrix Potter, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Madeline L'Engle and L.M. Montgomery?

What would have happened to me if I hadn't known how to read Harriet the Spy? Who would I be today if I hadn't read Zilpha Keatley Snyder?

Where would I be without The Chronicles of Narnia?

Reading is a highway for the imagination.

Reading shows you that you are powerful, you are magic, and you are never alone.

Reading sparks joy.

Reading is the how and why of dreams, beginnings, and becomings.

Every child and every adult deserves a book-filled bookshelf.

Reading is a basic human right.

Here are a few organizations that can help you get involved with literacy, or get more informed.

Take a look, volunteer or donate. Above all, read someone a book tonight.
